Hey guys sorry about the nub question...I just bought a xps system from dell and am currently using the onboard video. I bought a new radeon 6770. How do I install it? Not physically, the software...what is the order? Insert into slot....uninstall current video then install drivers from amd or what? Thanks in advance!

update: hey guys just did what the first 2 posts said..just popped it in and installed drivers. heres another q: i'm replacing my 6770 w/ a 6850. can i just swap cards and be done since they are both amd card?

if you are using integrated video then just install the regular AMD CCC, or download the latest version (what i do)

...no they are as you said "onboard" they are always there. You wont be using them if you are plugging your monitor into your GPU.

Uninstall software
unplug PSU cord after it powers down
take out card
insert new card
put PSU cord back in
turn on
let windows install drivers
reboot if necessary
download drivers if you haven't already
install drivers
that's it

:EDIT - o yeah, punch a kitten

One other thing is that you'll probably need to use one of the Molex to PCIe power adapters that came with the GPU. Of course, if the PSU has a native PCIe 6-pin power adapter, use that. I doubt it does though.

It's not like it's difficult to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones. If you're really worried about it then just do it. You can even install an app called "CCleaner" which will make sure no remnants of those files are left over before you install the new drivers.

i do pretty much similar but leave the kitten punching out of it.
in my case its Nvidia. the steps i do are

DL latest from Nvidia for my card and OS
Uninstall old drivers AND delete the Nvidia folder that is always left behind
power down and unplug power cord
remove old and install new card - remembering to install the 2x6pin power plugs
reboot and cancel when windows asks to install new drivers.
open the folder with the nvidia exe and let it install.
reboot when asked.
run games faster
