nino - sorry, it is PCI. I have been all through the device manager and can not find any ports other than com 1 and printer port.

<< plug and pray >>

:D

I don't have the model with me. I'll drop you a mail tonight if I still can not get it working.

Darrin - bozo1 is absolutely correct. Listen to what he is saying. I was reading down laughing out loud at some of the shots in the dark. Just goes to show you how many people have moved away from modems and on to broadband. The modem becomes a com port, it is very simple, don't point it to a paralell port.

Good luck,

LJ

bozo1 - It says "Select the port to use with this modem" and the only option is Printer Port (LPT 1). It does not give any other com ports as an option.

Joe - all the other times I have installed a modem it seemed to create another com port when I installed it. I think I need to take the card out and make sure it is the model and manufacturer that they said it was. Maybe I am trying to use the wrong drivers or something.

Yea LJ, my bad :) I'm sitting here using ADSL trying to figure out what is wrong. I havn't used a modem in ages. Although my first attempt was jaded, If I was sitting at that computer right now the first place I would be is the bios... whether it is disabling or enabling I can't remember but I'm sure I'd at least check. I know for a fact I had to do one or the other when I had a modem, perhaps it was disabling a com port in bios to free up an IRQ for the modem, I can't remember...

The modem will become the com port you configure it for. Device manager shows you what is already in your computer. You are adding to this.

bozo1 - After the card is installed and I load the drivers, and it asks me which com port I want to use for the modem and the printer port is the only option what do I do from there? I know I can not use the printer port. It does not create another com port. POS is fixin' to get a footprint in the side of it.

hehe... well, something is not right somewhere. When you install a PCI winmodem POS, it usually asks you what COM port you want to desigate it to be. This is for compatibility with old DOS based programs - Windows should communicate with the modem via its TAPI driver and it doesn't care what COM port the modem thinks it is. Regardless, if it asks you this it should allow you to select or type in or something a COM port that is unique from what is already in your computer.

What modem is it? Something isn't right somewhere.

It looks like you have a non-PNP internal hardware modem (or PNP is
disabled). First you have to manually install the COM port.
(Manual install of hardware)
Then you install the modem, installing it to the COM port you
just installed. Piece of cake..........

It is a Creative something (not creative labs). I'm going to pull it out tonight and look at it.

GregMal - Are you talking about going into add new hardware and creating a com port that way?

I'll try that first tonight because I'm using the drivers on win95 currently.

Darrin: Yes GM is talking about Add New Hardware and creating another port and designating it as a com port.
I do want to bring up one thing though: if its a PCI modem, then its a winmodem and on an old 133, that may be more than that puppy can handle. If its for more than email and light surfing, you might want to try and scrounge an old ISA modem for it. I'd send you one but I gave my boss my last spare ISA modem.
