How do I "Image" XP? (Ghost)... It's not working like it used to.

I've tried to clone a new hard drive with XP. I can't get it to work. When it almost gets into Windows I get a message something about "Windows cannot validate the registration" or something.

We use an Open Lisence CD Key, so we don't have to activate XP when we install it. But if we can't image it, we're screwed.

If anyone knows anything about imaging XP, let me know. We need to make some Ghost files here at work.

Is there some kind of "sysprep" tool I need to use?

Thanks

[edit] btw, I did check out technet and they just talk about using sysprep so you'll have "unique" SID's. I know from experience you don't "have" to run sysprep for the clone process to work. For purposes of cloning to a new hard drive and formatting the old one (using the same computer), sysprep is not necessary. My question is.. is sysprep "necessary" in order to even clone at all now? or, is there something else I'm missing? [/edit]

Ghost don't work with XP, as far as I know there's only one utility that does currently and the name escapes me. I'll see if I can find it for ya...

Hmm, I use ghost 7 and have had no problems imaging XP, even with an NTFS partition(which is where I thought the problems would occur), Have done it to three machines, using one machine as the Image machine, creating all images from one........

did you completely start the "image" machine up, log on such, install programs? or just pop in your boot disk and make an image?

also did the machine come installed with XP or did you install it yourself?

are the machines the same would be the next question.....since i'm pretty sure XP would require a reactivation if you changed so many pieces of hardware, even with an OEM version( I think in an OEM version they are tied to the system they are installed onto)......

Here's a tip though, try ghosting to a broadcast server running ghost, say xp.gho, then put the new HD back in and run the Multicast load, this is the way we have done it don't know how you have, looks like on same system though.

good luck though,

I haven't had any problems making an image of an XP partition with the last version of Ghost either, it was an NTFS partiton but of course I had to save it to a FAT32 partition, I am going to try the new 2003 version next.

<<We are using 7.5 Enterprise. No problems here at all. >>>

Same here. I use 7.5 Enterprise and it works beautifully. I use it for 3 XP machines and 1 Win2k Server machine here at my house. Love it!!!

I use Noton Ghost 2002 to back-up my HD (copy local disk to local disk). It works great with WindowsXP (FAT32 or NTFS)
