got a new HD tv....and HDtivo using comcrap cable.

the TiVo says to use the HDMI cable if the TV supports it, because it is audio and video. It also recommends using the optical audio out on the TiVo to drive a home theater system. However, won?t the ?surround sound? be messed up by the TV speakers if I use the HDMI cable? My current TV can be muted, but it always says ?MUTE? in big letters on the screen while it is? real pain. I doubt that the TiVo will detect that the optical audio is hooked up and disable the HDMI audio.

what do I do?

In most cases you can select to disable the audio on the HDMI cable. If that's not an option you can use component cables to the TV or mute the speakers when you want to use the surround receiver for audio.

Is it an HD Tivo (that costs $800) or the Comcast HD DVR boxes that are ~$15 a month? If it's the HD Tivo, use HDMI to the TV, and optical to your surround sound system, and mute the internal TV speaker in the TV menu's. There's usually a way to just disable the internal audio.

If it's a Comcast DVR box, don't use HDMI. The Motorola boxes have far too many problems with HDMI that make it not worth it. Component looks just as good and is cheaper. Use component video to the TV, and optical to the receiver. Done.

Even if your TV always says MUTE when you mute it, and even if it has no "speakers off" setting (which most do), you can still manually turn the volume down to nothing. As you as you plan to use your HT speakers, you wouldn't ever have to touch the TV volume again.
