How do I go about uninstalling IE 6?

Install Firefox and use that as your default browser?

MS made it improbable to run XP decently without IE installed. It could be removed from 98/ME and win2k SP2. After that they wove it in tightly on purpose to discourage just that, as well as they used that as an excuse at their anti-monopoly trial, saying that they cannot remove it because it breaks things.

There is a utility out there to remove it, but use it at your own risk.

well there is a reason I'm trying to remove it. I got some spyware and no matter what programs I run, I cant remove it but all pop ups are IE pop ups...

Upgrade to IE7 is the only way. It is an integral part of the OS...what would you use to navigate your OS and folders? Firefox? You would have to modify the registry to make the OS point to Firefox or whatever when accessing anything. Good luck with that

Are you connected directly to the internet or are you going through a router? There is a certain type of pop-ups that can get to your system if it is directly connected to the internet.

Download, install and update Super AntiSpyware and A-Squared anti spyware. These are both very good at finding tougher spyware.

thanx for the tip. I installed Adaware and that did next to thing. I ordered spysweeper but I'll download the programs you recommended as well.

You going to use command prompt to do everything? IE is integrated into the shell for browsing folders.

Spybot works well too.

Try Counterspy .. it is very good, but not free ... But it does have
a fully functional 15 days trial period .... Only downside is it
runs about 53Mb in size and does take time to run it's scans.
But it will find a lot that others may miss.

I tried couterspy and it was pretty effective. It atleast made my OS usuable, giving me time to back stuff up!

Get yourself some sort of router. Even a cheap router adds an important layer of protection between your computer and the internet.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but trying to remove IE because you have a spyware infection that invokes IE is sort of silly. If the PC is infected, you want to fix the root of the problem, not to try to hide the symptoms. In addition to Counterspy, try the free version of Superantispyware, too: http://www.superantispyware.com Also run an antivirus scan with your own antivirus product and get a second opinion from some online scanners (I'd suggest F-Secure's to start with: http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml ).

If problems persist, it's time for HijackThis.

Once the problem is fixed, prevent it from happening again.
