How do I go about making a check in canadian dollar?

IHAVEAQUESTION

Went to washington mutual thinking they might know how to do this. So I say "I want a bank draft, or a certified check or money order for 550 canadian dollars". She was like "huh, but we only do US dollar." So I am a little confused, how do I make a check in another currency?

Applying for canadian visa and they say the app fee should be in canadian dollar. Anyone?

Well, this certainly hasn't been easy.

Last month, I asked to verify my deposit amount denominated in canadian dollar, they gave me the same "we only do US dollar" crap. So all I got is a fund verification letter in US dollar. Mmm.

goto an airport.

Banks should be able to support many currencies, especially CAD, USD and EUR.

Why do the banks even need to "support" currencies? Why not just write out the check for whatever 550 CAD translates to in USD, then when the guy cashes it at his bank in canada they can give him however much CAD that USD check translates to? Am I missing something?

Yes. You're missing something called a Canadian Money Order.

You may be able to open up a CAD account at a US bank (or international... HSBC maybe?). Transfer over enough money to make $550 CAD, then take out a money order.

His question was how to make a check in canadian dollar. Isn't the answer just to do a quick conversion and make the check out for however much USD that 550 CAD translates too? The when the other bank gets the check they will do another conversion and transfer the correct amount of money?

Currency rate will change overnight.

When I worked at a smaller bank, we would buy foreign money orders from

Travelex when clients wanted foreign currency checks.

Then we'd charge a premium on top of what Travelex charged us. Alternatively, you could use a direct wire transfer, but that costs too much for what it sounds like you want to do.

It should be a CDN Money Order.

the exchange rate varies hour to hour. A money order verifies that the exchange was at the proper rate and if there is a dispute the money order is safer than a personal cheque..

Or he could just use pay-pal.

We have to write cheques in US$ occasionally from our Canadian bank account. All we do is write the cheque for the amount of US dollars required, and directly behind the number on the cheque we write US$ and then I initial the change. The US bank accepts this as US $ and then our Canadian bank pays out in US $ and applies the applicable exchange rate at the that time.
