How would you personally suggest people choose a lawyer? Or, for a simple will is one just as good as another?

There's really no one perfect method for finding a competent lawyer. In my field (business/litigation), it's mostly word of mouth. Yes, I am A+ rated here or 10/10 there, but as someone else said, those results can be easily manipulated and don't really mean anything.

If you don't know someone that can recommend someone, next best bet is probably your state's Bar website (for example - www.flabar.org), which hopefully lets you search for an attorney by practice area and locale. In Florida, that will at least tell you if the person has had any discipline from the Bar in the last 10 years (might want to shy away from someone who was suspended for screwing up a client's file). Obviously go to their website and check them out.

At the end of the day it's unfortunately a crapshoot given the sheer volume of lawyers out there.

If you have anything worth protecting I'd recommend going to an attorney that specializes in estate planning.
