take up a hobby

working out, woodworking, clean your filthy cave, fix up your car on the cheap, shit, even get a girlfriend.
these 2 are outright amazing alternatives to sitting in front of a screen, as they reinforce each other in practice. i have lost 20lb this year in body fat and im heading back up in weight due to my muscle gain from doing push ups, chin ups, crunches, lifts, and falling and harvesting willow and oak trees to make my own firewood and stock for staffs, clubs, and other things (starting simple before working into figurines and what not). also a big knife collector, so i have a wide selection of weaponry to chose from when i decide to go to town on a piece of wood. just got a new axe and machete today for falling stock because a 100 foot tall willow fell in the creek by my house, near a narrow bridge, and if i dont get it all harvested before the first heavy rainfall its gonna flood all of downtown palo alto!

Damn you all in the USA. Here in Canada, it's pretty well impossible to drop Cable or Sat.. all the good stuff is blocked for us, although there are work arounds but... not my thing. Netflix finally came, and it's GIMP compared to what you have. In order to combat Netflix... you would think our cable companies or sat would put something out there compete? Nope, they simply lowered our download cap. Precious!!!

Again lots of stuff you can however, I know that using my XBMC I can get a lot of addons to watch CNN and other news feeds, there's pretty much everything in the world to download from newsgroups if you want to go that route.

I have 5 computers just for this purpose.
Unfortunately I have a girl friend that won't let cable die completely.

Hooked up to my living room tv I have a Acer Revo 3610 with the Atom 330 (dual core) and nV Ion chipset. It works perfectly for 1080p over Flash almost hitting 80 percent CPU usage. It's low wattage and runs my MagicJack 24/7 without a hiccup (no more phone company either).
If you miss the live aspect of watching tv with people, Justin.tv may fix you up and feed the movie hunger. Hulu ads shows like The Office 4 or 5 hours after it's been shown. Network sites like mentioned - you can find streaming network tv if you're real good. I haven't tried Netflix but people seem to love it. Oh, and you can find sites orientated toward downloadable tv with that little thing they call Tore-ants.
If it wasn't for the other half, cable would have been cancelled with the phone 3 years ago.
