Hi,

Here is my problem and hopefully somebody can help. I have an external hard drive containing the image of a notebook hard drive. The image or copy of the notebook drive was created using Ghost 9. A clean install of Windows XP home was completed to the notebook, but I need to copy the contents of a particular folder back into the notebook. The particular folder in question is the user?s documents folder under Documents and Settings, but I am denied access to this folder. The owner had a password to log into the computer. How do I gain access to the folder?s contents? I have the username and password for the folder, but do not know to enter this information.

Details
A neighbor asked me to help him with his son's notebook that had become infected with a virus and spy ware. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 9200 notebook with Windows Home edition. I examined the notebook, and it definitely was infected. I determined that it would take a fair amount of time to disinfect the computer and recommended that they do a clean install of Windows XP. They had their Windows XP home CD.

I first backed up the hard drive onto an external hard drive using Norton Ghost 9 and successful reinstalled Windows XP home. However, when I went to the external hard drive to copy data files, I was denied access to the folder under the user?s name. I assume that the denial was due to the password the boy had on his computer but was not aware of the password when I started this.

I have right clicked on the folder and went to properties but could find anywhere to enter the password. So, I am perplexed here. I am considering pulling the driver out of its enclosure and attaching it to desk top computer. Would this been of any help?

Disable "use simple file sharing" in tools and take ownership of folder. Open explorer and select tools/folder options/view and scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck it. Then right click the folder you are trying to access and select security/advanced/owner and then add or change the owner to you or change the effective permissions to suit what you are trying to do.
