What are the things you need to get started? Can I use the built in firewire card from A7N8X board?

Buy one! There are USB 2.0 versions available (IIRC), but yes that FW support will be fine.

Where can I buy USB 2.0 card for cheap? I'm not sure if the Firewire in the A7N8X is a 2.0.

Firewire is Firewire

USB is USB

USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB1.1 which has been on basically every single motherboard for the past 5 years.

There are two types of FireWire.

FireWire / FireWire400 / 1394a = 400 Mbps

FireWire800 / 1394b = 800 Mbps

---

The iPod (all 3 generations) connect with FireWire(1394a). Your builtin FireWire will work great.

The latest iPod, 3rd gen, will connect via USB2.0 with an optional combo cable.

FireWire syncs and charges the iPod. I'm pretty sure USB syncs but *doesn't charge*.

In this care FireWire is definitely the best option since it charges and syncs. Even if you don't have FireWire you can get a card for the same price as the combo cable.

So is there a seperate power cable + socket to charge the ipod through a standard wall socket. For people who want to charge their ipod without turning on their PC and pluggin into the firewire port.

At least with the 1st and 2nd gen iPods, there was a power brick that had a Firewire connector on it that you plugged the firewire cable in to(and the other end in to the iPod of course), to charge it. I haven't seen the setup on a 3rd gen, but I'd be surprised if it's not the same.
