How do I get (some) scratches off of cd's?

I am trying to install windows XP (again), since eariler I started a topic about reformatting screwing up. I just had to mess around with some wires and such, and it formatted. but when I tried to copy the files off the CD, it would get to 31% and hang there. so far I tried hot water + paper towel + rubbing alchohol. that helped a bit, but not enough. it got rid of finger prints so I could move on a bit more. I just need to get rid of these scratches.

Youre best bet is to have someone or one with a cd writer to make a back up copy for you. Scratches are seldom removed especially when they are more than superficial!

I wouldn't use a paper towel. To dry it off, use a cotton wash cloth.

alright. thats easy. My dad has a dvd reader, which I belive can read cd's and burn them. he uses linux, so I don't know how I will burn the files onto my account on his computer, and then burn them back onto a clean CD (I have loads of them)

mind telling me?

MS OS CDs tend to have no copy protection (they have a CD key and activation is required!), so you can rip an ISO image, then burn the image. If it will do the ripping, you should be fine.

And in the future, either make a copy ASAP and use it, or be more careful!

I've got that SkipDr. It takes a lot of cranking for each disc, but it does a good job with all but the very deepest scratches. Don't worry about buying any extra bottles of that spray that comes with it either - it's just distilled water.

The only problem with burning a CD is that 1) I don't know how to do it from a command line, if someone could make a step-by-step guide for me to do it in linux, that would be helpful. and 2) I tried k3b, but I can't install it since I don't have root access on here.

not using a paper towel, i'm using toilet paper. (I used it for loads of other cd's, and my monitor.)

I was cleaning the CD again, and it went up to 35%, yes, a whole 4%!
