in Display Properties, you can re-set wallpapers, set it to "none" and the pic should go away.

I tried that too... I've been having that problem with Win2k. I didn't have the issue in 98, but for some reason Win2k caches a previous one for some reason. I had to set it to <none>, shut down, restart, and then set it to the one I want and everything was good to go.

When you first have wallpaper A which is a bitmap, then switch to wallpaper B which is jpg or something windows enables active desktop. Then for some reason while booting it shows the bitmap until active desktop "turns on" or something to that effect. So yeah, doing what the others said will fix it.

i have the same friggin' problem, is there possibly something in the registry that i could tweak...

I have the same problem, but in addition to the background...before it goes into windows the resolution is set to 800x600 i found something in the registry to change it to 1024x768, however, i can't find anything to get rid of that damn OLD wallpaper...

it's pretty ridiculous that you have to turn on active desktop just to use a jpeg or gif, etc. why didn't they just make that standard????

Stupid Microsoft.

I know how to get rid of it...or at least i've done it twice now on my comptuers and I know exaclty what problem you are talkin bout

The problem occurs because I think you have a logon/User prompt before you enter into windows. For me, I had a user name/password and if i entered it in correctly, the background would change to another one different from what I just had during the logon screen. If you hit "cancel" for the logon/password prompt and then go into Display properties, change the background to the one you like. Now "logoff and change users", enter your normal user name/pass and hit enter, it should now have the same backgrounds as you are used to seeing. Hope that helps and didn't confuse you, if you need more help, PM me.

Actually there are a couple of ways to have a jpg image as your background without having active destop enabled. 1. Convert the jpg to a bitmap then save it to the windows directory, or 2. Open the file in Internet Explorer (netscape would probably work too) and right click on the picture and then click on Set As Wallpaper. Granted, if you convert a jpg into a bmp it will be about 10x the orginal size, but at least it works :) I typically use option 2, but both ways will work.

My win2k has the same issue. Not a biggie but one of those things that annoys you each time you see it at startup. Thanks for the info...:D

Ok, I'll explain this to you all. If you right click on an image in IE, it will be set as both your wallpaper, and as a sort of low-level wallpaper. If you were to then go in and change your wallpaper in Display properties, it will only change the "high-level" wallpaper, and that old picture from IE will still appear before your Active desktop boots up. That's why you still see it when you boot up and shut down. To change both wallpapers, you need to open the picture you want in IE and set it to wallpaper from there.

keep in mind that wallpaper stays in video memory so if u have a slow card u don't want some 2MB bitmap to be redrawn everytime u go c the desktop...
