How do I get rid of the default message notification on Android?

I installed Handcent and have been using that but every time I get a message I get a notification from the default message app and Handcent? Also, how can I select what programs etc I receive notifications from?

You're going to have to disable the notifications coming from the stock app. Go into the stock messaging app, hit the menu button, select settings and then uncheck notifications.
