You guys telling him to kill it are way off base. Please do not kill any woodpeckers. They are having a difficult enough time with loss of habitat. They have no chance if we kill them off because they're interested in our(wood!) houses from time to time.

If he finds no food, he will stop. You could try putting(non-poisoned) suet out for him to eat instead, too. Owls, snakes.. whatever it takes. He is not the intruder here.

I have heard that hanging rubber snakes on the outside of your house scares them away. Sounds strange but my neighbors swear by it =/
there's mutha-fuckin snakes on the mutha-fuckin house!

I was told they do it (make noise), when they aren't actually getting insects, just to impress females.

They aren't impressing this female.

BTW, I'm not sure how much fake owls or snakes actually work on scaring them away as I live in deep woods surrounded by both real owls & snakes [including a nasty black racer who loves the bushes near my front door], yet I still have damn woodpeckers. I don't mind when they peck trees, but leave my siding alone.

I think wood peckers are totally awesome. There were a bunch of babies that would come to my bird feeder for awhile. And pileated woodpeckers are bad ass if you get to see one.

That said, I also have vinyl siding on my house.

Holographic ribbon/tape does work. Stopped them within a few minutes of putting it up on my house.

You just have to take it down before they realize what it is.

Thanks. I have starlings that love to nest in my vents. Killing them doesn't stop others. Going to try the foil.

*UPDATE*

I just wanted to post an update. So that night I sprayed the old bee's nests down with an ammonia and water mix. Now for the past 2 days I have heard the bird working on a tree in my neighbors yard but have not heard a single peck on my house.
