Instead of taking up all your time complaining that no one is helping you enough, why don't you help yourself. I knew nothing about overclocking or ram issues 3 months ago, but i took a couple days to research differant OC quides that were written for A64 overclocking and i sucessfully OCed my A64 3000+ winchester ($150) from stock 1.8Ghz up to 2.5Ghz (as fast as your FX55 you paid $800 for) on my first day trying it.

Why don't you remove 2 sticks and just run with 1G (512x2) and you will then be able to push those sticks to there max timing potential. Return the 3rd and 4th stick to the place where you bought it from for a refund, or if they won't take them back sell them or keep them for spare/next computer build. I Gig is plenty of mem unless you are into heavy Cad type programs or proffesional encoding stuff.

Dude, it's nothing personal. If you are trying to have 3 or 4 sticks, you're screwed.

It's a limitation of the Athlon64. Your Motherboard, North Bridge, and Memory Sticks are fine.

Your choices are either return the sticks and buy a pair of 1gb sticks or let 2 of the sticks sit out. Sorry man. If you posted before you bought the rig, we coulda warned you. :(

If I were you I'd just sell two of your sticks. 1 gig of memory is plenty, and the benefit from being able to overclock will much outweigh any detriment from not having 2 gigs.

According to both Asus and Mushkin, I should have no problems at all getting the memory to run at DDR 400... i tried following all the guides and what not, and they really aren't helping me too much, with this particular issue although they do help with future overclocking. Of course, I am not exactly trying to overclock. I did try and just set everything to auto and changed my memory to DDR 433 in the bios, and my pc failed to boot, so I had to reset the CMOS, so that did not work at all. Mushkin tells me that I had to be sure and set the timings and voltage for the memory to exact timings to get it to work at DDR400, and if I try DDR433, I would have to overclock (which you guys already pointed out to me).

Now, as far as asking you all before I bought it, how hell was I supposed to know anything about all this, to ask in the first place??? I notice that there are a lot of arrogant people on this board who seem to thing everyone should be able to OC like a champ, but I am not mentioning names. I am just tired of people questioning my purchasing decisions on here. You know why I bought the FX55 and 4 sticks of DDR433? Because I felt like it, that's why... This post was not intended as a "ask for buying advise" post, it was intended as "how to get to work" post.

All this being said, if anyone sincerely wishes to help me with what I have without removing anything, I very much appreciate it... For those that don't, go fry your own A64 3200's and leave me alone. At least I won't criticize your purchasing decisions!

Be as offended as you want - people are trying to explain why the parts you bought are unlikely to do exactly what you bought them to do. The seller should have had the knowledge to tell you this (since it sounds like they set up the system for you), but they elected not to.

Now, you've received all the advice you need to take your best shot at this, BUT you will get better performance from your machine if you sell two of the dimms, and run 1gig, because you will more easily be able to run 433ram, and you will definitely be able to run 1T not 2T. Therefore for almost any task, your system will be faster with 1 gig of ram than with 2.

Beyond that, do whatever you want, and good luck.

Has anyone noticed that minotar joined in 8-04?
Minotar I am sure you must have been reading ALL the posts about overclocking and memory way before you purchased your gear. YOU should have already knowen that 4 sticks of ram was going to cause problems. Just because you ask for help, does not mean you are going to magically get 4 sticks of ram to do the impossible. Please do not flame the good people of these forums for youre ignorance. I too have made mistakes along the way but I do not blame the ones that are truley trying to help.
my 2c worth.

I told him quite a few posts up that it was a limitation of current a64 mem controllers. If you had two sticks of ram it would not be difficult at all to run at 433, but you have four, and you want to keep four, which is fine, but you are going to have to play with your bios settings to see how far you can get your mem.

I did not flame anyone, Billwinkle... I am not the one that criticized people. Secondly, where can I find info about the limitations of the A64 memory controller, and such? Neither Asus, not mushkin seem to be aware orf this limitation, as I have talked to them myself. Thirdly, just because I have been a member of anandtech's forums for a while does not mean that I lurk in the overclocker's message boards. Did you ever think that it is possible that I rarely post anything and that most of the time, I just check Anandtech for hardware news? Anyway, thanks for those that helped thus far. If anyone can point out specific links about the A64 memory controller, I would appreciate it.

DDR 433 is an overclocked setting. DDR400 is the highest standard speed for DDR. DDR433 memory is memory that's guaranteed to work at the overclocked setting of 433.

And as for who's arrogant or whatever, when we tell you something is not possible, you keep getting mad, you complain, and you act like we're idiots. It's really, really insulting. We can't change reality for you. It won't work without 2T. You can not get what you want with that setup.

The problem is the processor, not the motherboard and not the memory. If you're going to ask someone, ask AMD, not ASUS or Mushkin. Neither ASUS nor Mushkin make the memory controller that's responsible for your problem. And even with that, you're talking to Customer Service Reps. If they don't know the answer, they won't say that they don't know...... because you'll just get mad at them.

If you want to keep having that kind of attitude, buy a Dell.
