How do I get in touch with 911 Dispatchers without dialing 911?

I was a witness to an accident. As I was crossing the street a cyclist was not too far behind. Anyway, he was halfway when the light changed and a gypsy cab struck him. He instructed the gypsy cab to pull over several times but the cabbie drove off. He asked to borrow my phone to call 911. After he returned my phone I told him the license plate of the cabbie and I left. I did not give the cyclist my information. In order to be on the record as a witness how would I go about contacting 911? Would they keep a record of the call and the telephone that called them?

I'm not sure. My suggestion is to look up the number for your local police department and ask them.

Look in the phone book for the non-emergency front desk number of your local law enforcement agency. It's a good number to have programed into your phone when you need to report something, but 911 isn't necessary.

I've met a seemingly disproportionate number of 911 dispatchers on "adult" websites.

I'd start there. :p

This isn't a 911 type of call. Call 411 or the operator and ask to be connected to the local PD.

The first page of your local yellow pages will have that information.

When I called the precinct they told me to dial 911 again and give the information and that's what I did.

This is what I would do. That way you're talking to the same dispatch center that took the cyclist's call. They have the best chance of getting the information associated with the correct case.

911 already has your information from the call made. When a cell is used to place a 911 call it sends the ESN along with it, part of telecom laws. There is a similar requirement for land line phones where when 911 is called the actual phone number is sent to 911 from the central office regardless of if the line has caller id blocked or unlisted. You basically cannot call 911 without them knowing where the call originated.

The only real way someone could have some form of anonymity for calling 911 is to use a payphone, and those are really rare now.

I call 911 and state it is a non-emergency. I've never had issues with it. Like when I was rear ended up but no one was hurt, etc.

Many people don't like the term "gypsy" or "gyped" because it understates the extreme problems still facing gypsy societies to this day.

The 911 call should have included the full name of the caller and you, the owner of the phone, with contact information. You can't get restless over this, hopefully.

But if you are that serious about this, local police dept. You may be waiting for hours depending on the circumstances, or even days. Another note, this isn't big fish that cops can fry, so it's a low level case; so don't lose sleep over it.

If it makes you feel better, the cabby may be getting what's coming for him or her; measure karma.

You can call information for the admin line of the local 911 dispatch.
The line is recorded but you are not tying up the main 911 line.

What's 9-1-1 going to do with the information?

QFT

There is no way in hell they are going to devulge your information to anyone. I am not sure why people worry about this.

Tell them at the point of call you wish to remain anonymous and only want to be involved as far as reporting the incident.

On the flip side I usually ask for a call back on many things I report and usually the officer that gets the case/issue will do so.
