It has been a while since I last did any hardcore running or any really physical activity, so I am need of your help here. I am going to start playing in a men's 20 - 29 y/o basketball league again this year, beginning sometime near Thanksgiving or so...so not a lot of time. How can I get back into shape to be playing on the court? I assume I should be running sprints on the treadmill instead of long distance runs?? How??

What is the most effective workouts to get in shape for basketball? I am more concerned with the running aspect (I need to have that physical endurance) than the weights aspect for muscle. Very little time and cold weather are the constraints. So treadmill work might be necessary instead of outside.

If you're going to ask me a question at least spend some time to read into it before you just ask me to describe a broad range of exercises.

Take some responsibility, be proactive.

Ditto.

Stair master, bike machines and the treadmill in a circuit fashion will get you up to speed quick.

First of all asshat, I didn't ask specifically you...you exercise guru you.

I am taking responsibility. And that is the responsibility of getting my body into shape so as not to let the team down and be a starting guard again this year. I never ever have done exercises to get in shape as I have always been very active person. Recently I have not and I know that will affect my ability to run without getting winded. So I was looking for advice. Instead I found an asshole.

You asked a question based on the statement I made, it was generally directed at me.

I can't stand people who aren't willing to do any research before asking a question. At least read up on it briefly so you have a rough idea about it.

It's not difficult.

What question are you talking about? I'm talking about my original post question of just trying to find a way to get in shape. You gave a general method name and nothing else. Thanks so much... <rolls eyes>

Instead of pointing me to a page that would work very well for what I want to do, you gave me a very general reply and expected me to try to figure out what the hell it was. If I knew this exercise method already, I would be looking for a set from those returned pages instead of posting on OT. But instead I am still trying to figure out what it all involves to begin with. Something that you already know, yet won't describe or give good info about. Thank you oh so very much!

Obviously you know nothing about it, you're too lazy to google it and do some work on your own.

Sweet Jeebus, THIS is the first Google hit, and it explains plenty. Get off your lazy ass and do some research. We're not just question monkeys here, its why people get pissed at others for not using the "search" function to look up their questions. This doesn't apply to you here, but seriously, at least TRY and Google it. The man gave you an idea, you have no right to expect him to give you a freakin' essay on it.

just trying to help you out. you need full out sprints to get in shape for bball, atleast on a high level. i don't think you can get a full out sprint on a treadmill...

I'm in the same situation with the OP, starting to play ball after a hiatus of 3 years. 26 yo and joining a bball league as well. What i'm doing is working hard on strengthening my legs to prevent injury (had an ACL reconstruction).

At the gym, I'm doing squats, leg presses, jump squats with barbells and plyometrics (jumping). Then 20 min on the stairmaster for cardio. Also doing calf raises to strengthen ankles to prevent sprains.

bottom line: run your ass off.

run suicides until you barf. (start at baseline, run to the FT line, back to baseline, run to half court, back to baseline, run to other far FT line, back, run to ther baseline, back.)

i'd stay away from constant, single paced runs. basketball is more stop/start and periods of sprinting.

practice harder than you would when you actually play a game. you may feel silly, but practicing with maximum intensity will make the actual games easier.

there's a basketball coach on AT here somewhere, he may offer some help.
