How do I get 6-channel audio with P4B533 to work?

I've tried everything I can think of. Default (autorun) install of drivers/apps from the mobo CD results in a dialog in the C-Media mixer that sez, "S/PDIF OUT only wroks (sic) on Headphone and 2 speakers". Ummm...the mobo manual (and everywhere else Asus advertises about this mobo) sez 6-channel requires coax via S/PDIF. Selecting 4 or 5.1 automatically unchecks S/PDIF and disables it.

Clean image drop and installing the drivers via Device Mangler doesn't work, either...tried both \Win_98SE\drv and \Win_9x\drv folders. S/PDIF isn't even detected by Windows Mixer when installing from the \Win_9x path. Other two install options shows S/PDIF Out in Windows Mixer (in the "Other" radio button), but whereas it can be selected...the OK button is disabled!!

Drivers downloaded from c-media website had an older timestamp.

Anybody know how to get 6-channel audio from this board?

System specs:

I don't have that (good) board, but I have audigy card and I am using SPDIF to my receiver. I suggest you keep that "Default (autorun) install of drivers/apps " and accept that dialog, connect it to a DOLBY DIGITAL receiver, then try to play some DOLBY DIGITAL DVD (almost every DVD) on WinDVD or something that support SPDIF output. If you receiver detected DOLBY DIGITAL signal, then it is working, at least it is my case.

Right...running WinDVD with Black Mask, I right-click->Properties->Audio. 4 speaker mode, 6 speaker mode and Enable S/PDIF output all all disabled. Of course, I hear 2-channel audio via S/PDIF connection to my JVC RX-7000V. Once I enable 5.1 in c-media mixer (which automatically disables S/PDIF), I get no audio at all on playback, and still the WinDVD Properties have all options higher than 2-channel disabled.

Plus, I want more than 2 channels for games, too...not just movies.

Repro'd with XP.

Can't believe I'm the only one on this board running one of these mobos...anybody else having this problem? Or does everybody disable the onboard audio and run a separate card?

Wow...thanks for the link. Didn't know about that board. Plus, I also found several interesting threads like this one that might help for tweaking. I'll lurk a bit, assimilate info, and if the answers can't be found I'll post.

Very cool. Thanks much. Bookmarked.
