My friend lost his key. Before he goes to reinstall how can he get it from his machine? I would assume it is somewhere in the registry but I can not remember where to look. thanks!

"my friend..."

Not making fun of you but you must realize how funny that sounds in today's world of software piracy!!

Back to the topic... I have no idea where or how to find that key.

Well, I know where it is but there is a problem...
Win98 and ME use a "different" locking scheme or so they say...
You enter in a different form of the key into 98 and ME and it
saves it as a 95 key in the registry...

He told me he bought his copy. I just thought it would be listed in his registry. I thought it would be ok to ask that. He does not want to use someone elses registration key and I do not want to give him mine.

Basically you couldn't take it out of the registry... you could however copy the registry install windoze with you code and then replace the registry... the reboot and do a regclean...

this works for win98
go Into start, run:type, regedit.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version

click on current version.

Look in the right pane for product key.

what happens if you change that in the registry to "111" or something stupid like that (anything non-valid)? Will it still work?

Also, I hope micro$haft doesn't add a checker into IE6 that phones home...
