Ok, here's the deal. I'm a college freshman living on campus and I also work at the computer shop on campus. As an employee, I'm entitled to purchase several Microsoft programs for really cheap (because the university has a license agreement with Microsoft). The point is, because of this license all CDs sold there are OEM and don't have any stickers. They're made at a production center and have authentication info, but nothing printed. When I installed the OS on my system it never asked for a registration key because it's built into the CD.

So here's the problem. I'm trying to install Stomp Inc's BackUp MyPC and it's asking me for a Win2k CD key. Is there a way I can find out what my CD key is?

Hmm....why would it want your CD-KEY?

I heard if you call Microsoft with the Product ID, they can give you the CD-KEY that you used.

Actually, it's asking for the product key. There are 5 blanks. So maybe it's not the CD key, but how do I find this info?

1.) No app should EVER ask for your CD-Key. This is confidential. Even MS will never ask you.
2.) It is not stored on your computer. The key is just used during installation. After, it creates a new serial number and such based off the key.

Well, here's what it says when I'm trying to create a Disaster Recovery Kit:

The Disaster Recovery process needs the Product ID that appears on the yellow sticker on the back of your Windows 2000 CD case.

So ... umm ... what do I do?

Even if you got it from school, it will have come with a PID. I had a Windows 98 directly from Microsoft that didn't require me to enter a CD-Key, but it still came with one. You probably threw it away. Best bet is to look on the internet for a pirated number.

Nope, I never threw it away. I never got one. Just a CD in a jewel case. Oh well. I guess this is where the thread is starting to border on illegal *shrugs*.
