how do i find out if i have a burner on an imac?

In os 9: Go the Apple menu and select "Apple System Profiler" and then devices and it should tell you what it is.
In os X: Go to the Apple Menu -> About this mac and click "More Info".

theres no more info button the the about this mac thing... im running os x 10.1.5

Go to Macintosh HD --> Applications --> Utilities --> Apple System Profiler and the "Devices and Volumes" tab will tell you what kind of optical drive is attached to your drive bus.
