I agree with Bonk -- that you should have worked SOMEWHERE else before. If not, I strongly recommend doing research at your school with a professor.

You can usually get those jobs by striking a conversation with a professor. It works great at my school!

Alternatively, the way I got into computer related jobs was doing independent projects on the side outside of my coursework to prove my abilities and creativity. In fact even when I am working, I usually have a pet project or two.

Wow...all I can say is check the classifieds and good luck. Also chances are you won't get the job you want with zero experience, you might have to flip burgers or do some physical labour...either that or do some volunteer stuff for experience. Employers will just think you're a lazy ass who rode off his parents for his whole life. At least I would if I were an employer.

no, i disagree with kami :)P)... you just have to know where to look. do you have any contacts in the univ? you can do simple computer work for departments on campus. that's what i did when i was freshman... then in sophomore year i got a job doing tech supp. kind of job for the univ. i would look for a univ. job.

Good luck. I've got almost all the criteria going for me (I've had steady jobs full-time since I was 16, 3.8GPA, great recomondations, TA, blah, blah, blah, ect.), but found nothing. I think I sent out about 25 resumes/applications & every one came back to me saying they were hiring NOBODY for the summer (most companies are laying off around here, so I don't blame them for not taking on interns). It wasn't just in NY for me either, I went as far as OH & VA for some of them. I still haven't found a job, but have an application in @ wally world, price chopper & a few other places just hoping to get SOMETHING to make $$$ this summer.

One summer I did roofing.

Hard work for a decent wage.

You'll get dirty though, which seems to turn off a lot of younger people.

I'd do it, if it weren't for the whole climbing on the roof thing. If they bring the roof down to ground level, I'd be in ;). <-- not a big fan of heights.
