How do I file a police report?

I can't find the info on the LAPD website, and all numbers I call result in answering machines.

Does anyone know what steps I should take to file a police report?

This morning around 6am, my ex punched me in the chest. I never thought he'd hit me. Dropped to the floor, couldn't breathe for a couple seconds, rolled over and threw up.

911 was busy.

After he hit me, he told me he was sorry, that he loved me, that he didn't mean to hit me, and not to call the police.

Long story short, he left when he thought the cops were coming... I had a flight to catch at 7:30am home to Texas, which I missed. A friend drove all the way to West LA from Pasadena (took him well over an hour with traffic), and he took me to the airport. At that point, I just wanted to go home to my family.

I caught the next flight out, arrived safely in Dallas around 2pm today, went to bed, and woke up just now. I do want to file a police report, and get a restraining order.

No man should EVER hit a woman. EVER.

Any advice/info appreciated. Thank you.

While I agree that you need to file a police report I disagree with that statement. A woman balls up her fist and takes a swing at me and hits me...the gloves come off darlin'. At that point you cease being a woman and are an adversary.

I'm in Texas now, FoBoT. I will return to CA next Wednesday. Will it be too late by then? Can I file one out-of-state?

Either go to the police station, or call 911 (I don't know about LA; but in Seattle, I was told to call 911 whenever I needed to reach the police as 911 is just the "routing" area).

911 was busy when I called at the time. I don't want to call 911 now, as the incident is over. I was looking for some sort of online form, but there don't appear to be any. Most answering machines don't allow me to leave a message, and say to call back during operating hours.

no it won't be too late, just go to the police station and tell them the whole story

Well, regardless of my general disagreement with most of your actions, I do have this piece of advice: go see a doctor, and if possible have pictures taken. Pictures of a bruise along with a doctor's report can make or break a case.

I have slight bruising on my chest, but it's already fading. I'll take pictures with my digicam tonight, and will see what I can do about going to a doctor tomorrow. Thanks for the advice, Osorum.

I'm all for not hitting women, one of the many reasons I hate my father.

HOWEVER, if a women hits me good, I will not hesitate to use force to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Or if the woman has a bat, I'll hit her back.

Same guy. He ended up paying me back the money he owed me after returning from a trip to Japan, and because of that we started speaking again. I had NO intention of EVER getting back together with him. He knew about my 19 y/o b/f (now ex-b/f, lesson learned from that as well), but flipped out this morning because he found the phone number of another guy in my jeans pocked. I'd allowed him to spend the night in the living room to take me to the airport next morning... and when I fell asleep, he went through my trash, my clothes, my room and even my car. When he found the number, he shook me and woke me up, crying and screaming. Asking me why I continued to "hurt myself" by looking for other guys (i.e. anyone who isn't him). Demanding to know why I couldn't just accept the fact we were "meant to be together". He called me a million and one "colorful" names (use your imagination), and when he came inches from my face screaming "YOU'RE A FVCKING WHORE CVNT SLUT FOR TALKING TO ANY OF THESE NIGGAS WHO WILL NEVER LOVE YOU BUT JUST USE YOU FOR YOUR BODY, I HOPE YOU GET AIDS AND DIE A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH", I slapped him (not hard enough to hurt him, but hopefully hard enough to have him regain his senses... he was making something out of nothing). He grabbed my wrists and threw me against the wall, saying "IF YOU TOUCH ME AGAIN I'LL FVCK YOU UP" (keep in mind, he's MUCH bigger and MUCH stronger than I am). I struggled until he let me go, screaming/crying, and told him to leave... to please leave. He threw things around my room (cell phone when I reached for it, etc.), and I tried to push him out the door. That was when he hit me.

He pushed me once in the past, but I never thought he'd hit me with the force he did.

All about documentation. Take time stamped pictures and develop somewhere. Digital cameras are great, but its all regular 35mm's and developing so that the other side can't point out the fact you can program the camera to put a previous date on it.

Even this post on anandtech can be used as proof. Although there is no real proof here, it shows a timeline of events.

That, and a doctor's report.

It all really depends on what you want to do: send him to jail or sue him.
