How do I enable PERMANENT tree-view in windows explorer in XPPro?

Just recently I started using tree-view more often in explorer, and have noticed that whenever I close, then open the window again, the view has changed back -- so is there a way to enable tree view in explorer permanently?

Thanks in advance..!

Switch to Tree View in a particular window, then up in the Menu Bar, select 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options' -> 'View' (tab) -> Press the 'Apply to all Folders' button

Darnit, I got excited, it seemed that should work...but it didn't. Tree-view was disabled next time I opened the window...

maybe there's a registry hack that makes tree-view permanent?

Wait... what exactly do you mean by tree view?
If it what I think it is, then it is a registry hack, but you can download TweakUI from Microsoft to fiddle with different things in XP Pro and I think that may be one of them.

No, I downloaded it and looked over the options under Windows Explorer - nothing about setting a default tree-view or anything like that...

I'm thinking there's a registry hack that would do this - would anyone know what it is? thanks:)

Anybody?

I really don't want to get an explorer replacement, since I'm only looking to permanently enable the tree-view in Windows Explorer...

Tried Directory Opus which is a very feature-rich explorer replacement but also very crash-rich; three times in under half an hour.

Again if anyone knows the registry hack to make the tree-view in Explorer permanent, I'd dearly appreciate it....thank you:)

Nevermind, I got it!!

It is a registry hack, turns out a friend of mine knew it by heart and just wrote it down for me...next time I'll just ask:roll:

What's the registry hack?

I know how to do it without editing the registry (making "explore" the default when double-clicking on my computer)...but curious as to your way.

Actually, it turns out the that the only way to do that was to install a plugin called Finderbar, then use a registry hack to enable it permanently. When I first activated the registry hack, it brought up the explorer tree automatically -- BUT when I restarted, the explorer tree was gone. Turns out the registry tweak was meant to keep the plugin Finderbar permanently enabled and NOT the built-in explorer tree...I'm learning to live with it, it's almost as good.

How do you 'make "explore" the default when double-clicking on my computer'?

Try TheStu's suggestion along with pressing shift, control, or ALT and the (gray X button) to close the window. I think one of those keys is supposed to make Explorer save its GUI state.

I have good luck with Windows Key+E, personally. That seems to be "E"xplore. You'd probably have to hack shell32.dll with resource hacker to get My Computer to do something else.

I use a program call xplorer2 lite. It is a free and much better Explorer replacement. The side by side drive comparison is great!

download tuneup utilities 2007 trial, run the program, then click tuneup system control, then click on the folder options on the left, then a checkbox that says "always show tree view in folder windows" should be there.

hope that helped!

1. Right click on my computer and select EXPLORE
2. Go to TOOLS ---> FOLDER OPTIONS ---> (tab) FILE TYPE ---> select FOLDER then click ADVANCED
3. Click EXPLORE then click SET AS DEFAULT
4. Click OK

When you right click on my computer, EXPLORE should be bolded to indicate it's now the default setting.
Once you set your columns up the way you like, details, widths, etc. Go back and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS and it'll "stick"
for everything you view in explorer.

Hopefully, I didn't miss any steps since that was from memory...

Great, glad to help. It's always something I did whenever I re-installed XP for myself or anyone else...that and the reg. hack to automatically make XP put menu items in alphabetical order.
