How Do I Eliminate XP Logon Screen Where I just Click my Name

For some strange reason, when WinXP Pro loads, it now puts up a screen where I click on my name "John" to continue the startup process.

How do I eliminate this?

as far as i remember, you can use Tweakui..

Not 100% sure about this... someone correct me if i am wrong..

Download the tweakui powertoy and enable "Autologon"

I do it in the registry for my clients' home boxes. Other than that, I go all of the way to ctrl-alt-delete login for my main box... to each his own

Since downloading the Microsoft .NET Framework, I have been unable to bypass the screen you refer to. Nothing, including Tweak UI has done the job for me.

Actually Tweak UI worked for one boot. Then it reverted back.

Check your Add/Remove programs for the Microsoft .NET Framework. I'm running XP Pro same as yourself. I'd be interested to read if we're both in the same situation.

Thanks, For some reason I needed to load some video app and it required Microsoft.NET framework to be installed. I just uninstalled AND - no login, and the compturer appears to be much faster.

I use Drive Image 7 to backup to a spare HD. The original install included a version of .NET that functioned without the login screen.

I was OK until I downloaded a newer version off the Microsoft update site. One of these days I'm going to revert back to the older version and get rid of the login. I've been thinking of a reformat though, which would take care of it too. Of course I've been thinking of all this for about 6 months. Haven't got around to it yet.

What goes through my mind is that if I'm going to reformat, I might just as well start with some newer hardware ............. and well, you know how it goes.

You bring up a good point - Backups. I've got 5 computers on my home network. One of them I have setup as a Personal Video Recorder (Snapstream) and it has 290Gb of storage. I would like to backup each of my computers to that machine at 2am, 3am, 4am, 5am each day. I was thinking of buying NTI Backup, but since I saw your post, maybe you have already thought through all of this.

We have two computers here (his and hers) networked through a router. I have Drive Image on each machine with a backup HD in each machine. I have DI scheduled to do an Image of each computers C drive daily to their respective D drives.

Mine is on every day, and my C is actually a RAID 0, so I am very interested in a quick restore in case of a failure of the RAID array. So far though it has been bulletproof.

The wife's computer is not on every day. But by setting it up to create an Image every day, I am sure to have something recent. If the computer is on, there will be a backup.

So, DI can do scheduled backups. It can also do network backups which is what you require. You could back up each machine on the network on whatever schedule you desire. I can backup my 12 GB in about 7 to 8 minutes. The point being to make sure you leave sufficient time in the schedule to allow each task to complete before starting another.

I am not familiar with NTI Backup, so I can't offer an opinion on that.

I like creating Images instead of selective backups. Hard Drives are cheap nowadays. The DI software comes with a Backup Image Browser utility that will allow you to restore an individual file or files if required.

In reading this through, I sound like I work for them. I don't. Hope this helps!
