How Do I Dual boot Vista x64 & Ubuntu x64?

Ok, so I installed Vista Ultimate x64 on 1 partition which 40GB, 1/2 the space of the volume.

I installed Ubuntu 7.0.4 x64 according to a document I found and when I rebooted, it just went straight to Vista...

I checked in the Disk Manager in vista and it shows the remaining free space as unallocated. I left 40GB unallocated so Ubuntu can use it to partition ext3 and swap.

Any idea's?

cant you just change boot priority in your bios to the drive you want to install ubuntu to, and unplug the vista disk? once they are installed to seperate drives you should be able to boot from one or the other by changing boot device in the bios

I would prefer to keep them both in a mirrored set...

Ok, so I installed Ubuntu again on the remaining free space and now when I boot it says "missing operating system"

Now neither OS's will boot!

When I boot the ubuntu live cd and view the partition editor they are all there and look correct but for some reason no boot loader was installed or something. I dont know. What can I do? Before w/ 32bit windows I would open a recovery console and type "fixboot" & "fixmbr" but in 64bit I know it doesnt have MBR...

Has anyone done this or anyone have any insights on how to fix this? I dont want to lose my Vista at the least but if I have to start over I guess I have to, but I want that as the last resort...

Ok, I fixed that and am back into Vista. Turns out since the volume was mirrored I had to flag the Vista partition as the boot partition on both drives...

Ok, now I have to figure out how to add it to the boot loader for windows so I can access ubuntu if I wanted to...

Yes the RAID I am using is onboard HW RAID on my EVGA 680i SLI mobo. Does Ubuntu not like that? I have used Fedora lots in the past but want to try ubuntu...

you could have mentioned that. The dmraid module has to be part of installer, and as of now it is only present in Fedora Core and SUSE.

I was searching online threw vista64 forums and looking around at the new boot loader for vista and all of a sudden I thought of something. When I boot w/ Ubuntu live cd I changed the boot partition to the windows partition on both disks. What If I change the boot partition to be the Ubuntu partition on both disks and add Vista in the Grub boot loader?

I am going to try this when I get home today since that was the my original purpose. If someone has tried this w/ both x64 OS's please let me know...

The fact that the OSes are 64-bit has nothing to do with your issues. If you can make your fake RAID card work in Ubuntu as more than just an ATA controller it'll be fine.

It is not easy to do it for ubuntu. Like I said two times already, try fedora core or suse 10.2 if you want to use motherboard-chipset-based RAID
