Sorry, I know this is a dumb simple question, but I have no clue how to do it. Basically I want to connect via wired and not by wifi, I have everything set up, but I don't know how to turn of the wifi on my laptop.

I'm really noob when it comes to computers

Thanks :)

Which laptop do you have (Brand/Model). A simple way would be to click on the wifi icon near the system clock to bring up the wifi connections and select the connected network and select disconnect. You can also disable the wifi adapter either via a switch on the laptop, a function key or by going into Network and Sharing Center and then Change Adapter settings.

edit: I believe she has the msi gt70 as per another thread

usually there's an fn + f1-12 combo for wifi.
from google, the easiest way is to touch the icon to the right of the power button. fn + f8 or fn + f9 might work also.

if your notebook doesn't have a keyboard shortcut, you can always

click on the wireless network connections list in your tray (bottom right)
open network and sharing center
change adapter settings
right click on wireless network connection
disable

Yep! MSI GT70 2OC-065US
You been stalking me? :p lol

But yeah, it's not working. This is what I see http://gyazo.com/1c7eaf8bdab7223dde8f3c749fc4e0d5
I disabled 'Wi-Fi 2'. As you can see, it shows that I don't have connection? Waaaaw, I'm confused.

That gyazo link shows "Network cable unplugged" under the ethernet connection...

no I just remember that you posted about a gaming notebook, and checked your recent threads through your profile ;).

If you right click that icon (wifi 2) and select disable, it should disable the device.

It looks like your wired network isn't being detected correctly :(
what's your wired network consist of?

what's your wired network look like? Is this wired network being provided by a school? they usually provide directions and support on how to connect to their networks.
Yep, your correct :)

Yes, I disabled wifi 2.
I bought the wire myself, so everything should be good to go. No instructions from my landlord, but all I got in my room is a ethernet wall thing next to my desk, obviously it's for internet :)

I don't understand why it's not recognizing the wire, everything is connected

EDIT. 'what's your wired network consist of?' eeeeeh? >_<

the ethernet wall jack might not be connected to the router/network? you should probably ask your landlord about it.

It might be left over from a time when wireless wasn't as common ;)

I'm sure it's connect to the router. My roommate is connected via ethernet, so I'm pretty sure :)
Owel, I guess I have to ask my landlord. :$
Thank you for helping me out, really appreciated. Everyone above too, thank you!

The only other explanation is if you happened to have purchased the wrong type of cable :p
There are ethernet crossover cables for directly connecting 2 devices (i.e. direct connection of 2 pcs), and normal/patch ethernet cables (i.e. the normal way with a router)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

not sure if this even applies with modern hardware though, since anything recent should automatically account for it i think.

No, I'm sure it's the right one. My friend uses the same wire to connect his XBOX.

Is the XBox connected to the same wall plate that you are trying to connect to? What happens with your laptop, if you disconnect the XBox, and plug your laptop into the same jack and wire?
