How do I decrease the amount of time it takes Windows XP to Shut Down?

My computer is really slow at shutting down. It will sit for about a minute with no hard drive activity whatsoever and then turn itself off. I think this is to allow the hard drive to finish data transfers but mine (Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus) get's it done in under 10 seconds. Is there a way I can fix this?

I know this can be done because Dell's at work shut down much faster. Any suggestions?

Normally if your computer takes a while to shutdown it's because a service is hanging while trying to shutdown. I noticed this problem with my friends' Win2k machine. Took about 3 minutes for it to shutdown and it would just be sitting there doing nothing. Turns out it was the McAfee antivirus service hanging on shutdown. Check your event logs for any errors.

You can always try shutting services off (not disabling them just stopping them) and seeing if it shutdown any faster. Then just narrow it down.

Nope no errors, plus my machine is set to automatically end hanging programs on shutdown. Any more suggestions?

You can still have a service hanging or just taking a really long time to stop. Try stopping services like antivirus, firewalls, etc before shutting down and see if it's any faster.
