how do I decompile a simple program

I stumble upon a game hack, that's no longer valid as the game had been patched. But I am curious to learn the methodology behind the program. However, the program is locked by a serial number. I would like to learn how to decompile it to bypass the serial, and possibly decompile it to examine the code. as you can tell, i have very little programing experience.
