how do i create a wifi hotspot from my laptop

where im at there is no cell phone service, and no wifi available. I am able to connect my computer to the internet through a lan connection though.

I was previously using connectify because it was simple and it just worked, but since i switched laptops, the program no longer works.

I've tried things in the past with no success. I remember creating an ad-hoc connection, and setting everything up right according to whichever guide i was using, but then was unable to see the network that i created.

Im using windows 7 btw. Im sure it should be easy enough. Can anyone give me directions?

I don't think that Windows 7 has a "soft AP" functionality built-in.

I've seen that functionality advertised on cheapo generic RealTek-chipset USB wifi NICs, but I've never tried it.

well connectify worked great in the past, but from what i understand, it just simplifies what you can already do within windows.

That was until it decided to not work on a different laptop.

What is the wireless adapter in the laptop that does not work? Some wireless adapters simply don't have the ability to act as wifi hotspots, and if the adapter can't do it then Connectify can't do it either...
