How do I connect two Computer(Not Sharing the Net)?

I just purchased new computer and I want to copy over all my files from the old computer. Both computes have a Network card and I do have a cross over cable but I am not sure how to configure them so they can connect. Both are running Windows Me.

Open up network. You can do this either by right-clicking the desktop icon, and selecting "Properties", or by going in to Control Panel to open it up. Once it is open, you will see a list of the adapters and protocols that are installed.

Click "Add", then select "Protocol", and click "Add" again. Then, from the left box, highlight Microsoft, and from the right box, highlight NetBEUI. then click OK.

At this point, it will want your Windows CD. After it installs the files, you'll need to reboot.

After the reboot, go back in to networking, setup file and print sharing, reboot, then go in to My Computer, right click the hard drive icon, select properties and setup the share.

If you only want copy files, the simpliest way without setting up a network is to take the HDD from the old computer and install it on the new one as a slave. Put it back after you're done.

Opening up both systems, removing the drive, changing the jumpers, installing it in the other system, copying the files, removing the drive, changing the jumpers back and re-installing it in the first system is simpler then clicking a few icons?

I just tried what you said Russ and nothing seems to be happening. Do I need to Map the drives or something like that??

I would have to go with Russ on this one, adding:

Make sure the computer names are different and the workgroup is the same. Then after rebooting yet again, you should be able to browse through network neighborhood to the other computer.

You should also have indicator lights on your NICs that are glowing happily.

Thanks, I will make sure they have the same workgroup name. I think that was the problem.
