How do I compile a cutom kernel?

As some of you may know, I have asked in a few other threads for help getting Linux to install on my Dell system...

After talking to a few more people, I was told that I should try compiling a custom kernel specific to my system. My question is, how do I do this?

Do you have another Linux system to work with? If not, it's going to be awfully tough. Even after compiling a kernel, you'll need to replace the installation disk's kernel with your custom version. Most distros use syslinux for an initial loader. That takes a bit of work to customize, and again, you'll need a Linux box to do it. All in all, this is not an easy path, and I kind of doubt it would help anyway.

I can't say much more than was suggested in the other thread. Are you quite sure the memory is OK? Can Windows install properly? Also, if you have a "Plug-and-Play OS" setting in the BIOS, try changing that.
