Anyway, I graduated from college this past May and had an internship through August. Since that, I have been without a job. Anybody here wanna hire me? :D My degree is Graphic Arts/Imaging Technology...

I was talking with a friend who said one of his friends has been collecting unemployment checks.. I need these checks! Whats the qualifications on this? I am living at home (in muh momma's basement... pathetic, huh?). What do i need to do to get this going?

I know there's some unemployed anandtech bums out there, so tell me how ya did it!!

Well that is called welfare loser.

To collect unemployment you have to have a job first.

Usually you need to be working for at least one full year. Then your call or stop by your local labor dept. office, and request an Unemployment Insurance Claim.

Does an internship count as a job? In canada you need full time employment for about 6 months before you can collect unemployment benefits. May to August though certainly won't count...

Not sure. I think to collect unemployment you have to work full-time which is considered more than 35 hours per week (I think).

Also,

The amount of your unemployment check is based on your earnings from you two highest earning quarters. So, you actually have to earn money to collect unemployment. Other than that, its a simple call to your EDD Department.

Yep...and you have to be full-time. If your internship is through a university, you're probably not eligible for benefits and actually on the fulltime list. Most companies would classify you as fulltime-temporary or temporary. So get out and help society rather than stealing from the government. I used to work under the JTPA before it crashed and these low-lifes would come in and try to rape the system for whatever they could get. That really sucks to do that to your fellow americans.... I'm personally tired of paying my way and everyone elses that can't get off their lazy butt and get a job. :)

Maybe something else needs to be made clear here. AFAIK, to collect unemlpoyment, you have to first have had a job for a prolonged period of time. I think 6 months is even enough to collect. You also have to be laid off. If you quit or were fired I do not think you can collect unemlpoyment.

Being fired or quitting will not disqualify you - however it will trigger a longer delay in time before you can collect. Normally there is a 1 week waiting period before you are eligible. With a non-layoff it is usally 4-8 weeks.

Also, if you can not work full-time you are usally disqualified. If you admit to going to school while un-employed they can suspend your benefits
