My fingers get oily... I wipe them...but apparently there's still oil. Eventually my keyboard keys get smoothed out. Can I somehow get the original texture on my keys back? I tried 409, but it didn't help.

Dishwasher. When it's done. Hang it up to dry for a few hours. (Assuming you can be away from AT for that sort of time)

Actually, this does work. But it works better if you unscrew the top of it so you don't have the electronic portion in there. The keys should be hooked in by the top portion, so you can put that part in your dishwasher and it should work. The text on your keys might wear a bit, though.

Yep, I do that all the time. Works perfect.

Okay...lemme be more specific. How do I clean the laptop keyboard? :D

This eliminates the idea of dishwasher and throwing it away to buy a new one.

So I guess dishwashing fluid would work?

Just did this now actually. Took all the keys off, took off the top, sprayed it down with cleaner, cleaned with qtips, then put it under the hot shower for a few minutes. Came out great.

I mean, I've used 409 and the oil or whatever doesn't come off. I was wondering how I could get it off. (half of my space bar is shiny and smooth while the other half isn't. I don't want it shiny and smooth.)

dont use the dishwasher, your asking for trouble. if water gets into the plastic circuit sandwich sheets under the keys, the water will stay between em until the thin leads corrode. take it apart.

Okay, not to be a dick, but you do realize that the shiny spots are not where there is oil, but where the friction of constant use has worn down the texture on the plastic, right?

Yep... that's what I do... I have 4 or 5 brand new keyboards that were free or like $2 after rebates from places like Office Max. One gets dirty or a key starts sticking, it goes in the trash and a new one comes out... if I don't like how it feels, I get another one out and try that one.

My keyboard is a Focus 2001, and it is not cheap. Replacing it would cost $25 - $30.

I use Windex sprayed on a paper towel or cloth for most of the job, an old soft toothbrush to remove stubborn grunge and a Q-tip dipped in Windex to get between the keys.

I thought about that..but within a month? My month old 600m's spacebar is shiny...but my dad's 11 month old 1100's keys are all fine.

But maybe it really is worn down. Already.

i just cleaned my keyboards yesterday. i popped the keys all out and unscrewed the bottom part. left it in the dishwasher for 10mins and it comes out brand spanking new.

unforunately i dont know how some of the keys go back. and its a pain in the butt to pop them back in. hurt my fingers alot.
right now im typing on a old old keyboard that has something crunchy underneathe the keys.
