How do I clean cat piss off of a futon mattress

They pissed all over it like a week ago, and I have yet to successfully remove the pee-smell/stain. Please advise.

Edit: I posted this further down, but since people keep posting their suggestions and aren't reading that far into the thread first, I'll let you know I'm soaking it with a bunch of Nature's Miracle enzymatic urine-destroyer. Thanks, you guys are awesome and I'll update if something goes wrong.

I always used baking soda, and a wet rag. Rub it in very well, let it sit for a day or 2, then vacuum it off. It may take some more scrubbing to get the soda out of the weave.

think about it, its a cotton or whatever packed thick pad soaked with urine. unless you take it apart to totally clean the filler or replace the filler, you are just covering up cat piss that remains all over the inside of that matress.

I might try this. I'm a dude with no clue when it comes to housecleaning in these situations, so I don't know how much or how little baking soda to use. For one thing, the piss seriously covers like 1/3 of the mattress. I guess it shouldn't be difficult to figure out anyway.

Even though I scoop the litter box everyday, I think both of my cats peeing on the futon might be a result of not actually CHANGING the litter as soon as I should've. Come to think of it, I should probably change it again now.

Are you sure it's both cats, and not one cat trying to tell you it has a UTI or something? Also, was this a one time thing or have they been using it regularly? If regularly you might want to just toss it. Some cats get in a habit, and no matter how much you clean, they'll come back. They've associated that spot/item as a potty.

I recently had to replace a section of carpet/pad + killz the subfloor on my stairs because one of mine had a UTI while we were on vacation for a week.

If you go the baking soda route, you can't use too much. The stuff's 50¢ a pound, so be liberal with the application. I'd think a 1 pound box would be more than sufficient.

Thing is that you might get the baking soda cleaning to work but probably not.

This is an enzyme based cleaner, and I've used a couple others and I just find this particular brand (Nature's miracle) works better.

It uses an enzyme to break down the the molecules that smell into smaller non-odorous ones. With a very large stain it might take awhile as you have
to reach all of the stain. Might have to repeat. I used it before when a couple cats I had peed on the curtains. The smell was gone the next day.
The trick to getting the one main culprit to stop pissing.

I also kept it around if my cat ever missed his litter box. A little spray bottle of this always made sure the urine stink was never a problem.

No, I'm not sure it's both cats. The reason why it seems that way is because the piss stain covers such a huge amount of surface area on the mattress (it's not just a tiny spot, but more like 1/3 of the top of the mattress). It's an average-sized futon mattress.

I doubt any illness is involved. Just a one-time thing, at least, when I walked into the room and realized there was obviously pee where there was none before. Ever since then I've just kept the door shut to that particular room, I don't go in there much and since it's closed off they won't be tempted to go in and use it as their new potty. We had to do this with another room in the house in which one of my cats got into the habit of using it has her potty, so again, they've kind of learned to not use the room anymore. They're generally good about using the litter box.

So, I think I might go to Petco tomorrow to buy some of this Nature's Miracle stuff. I'm anxious though because it's been well over a week since they did it, and it's just kind of been sitting there. I don't know how effective the cleaning solution will be when the accident isn't fresh. Makes me wish I would have asked a lot sooner.

It should work even if it's been awhile. You might just have to do a reapplication or two.

Just to make sure, you should check that there aren't any struvite crystals in the spot. (looks a little "sparkly"..sorta)

call a hospital and ask for environmental services (janitors). They deal with piss and shit 24/7. Or you can soak mattress in bleach for 24h

vinegar + baking soda. The vinegar lowers the PH to the point that bacteria cannot survive which is what causes the smell later. The baking soda cleans up any ammonia smell.

Ok, I bought a 1.89 liter bottle of Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer, and totally doused the mattress with almost half the bottle. I'll let it soak and dry for a week or two. Here's to hoping it works; that stuff isn't cheap.

Just to make sure, you should check that there aren't any struvite crystals in the spot. (looks a little "sparkly"..sorta)
