Overclock Checking tool...set affinity? Sorry but i don't know what those are !! I'm new to all this stuff.

When i first got my pc it was booting normally i mean no double booting, for the fisrt 2 days then suddenly i got a weird message on the boot screen. I dont remember well but it was something like that: "(some figures) 1 cpu... Memory T" , i think it was either a capital T or something similar, then it froze there.

I'm concerned about the other cores because when it boots normally it shows 1 cpu, 2cpu,3 and 4 and then it goes on to windows. As i dont know anything about bios settings i shut my pc down then i switched the ez ccmos. When it booted next i did not get the "1 cpu ...and freeze" but rather the abit screen prompting me to go to bios or proceed to windows normally.

You can get to windows desktop, then just push Ctrl,Alt,Delete one time. Should get a popup box,(task manager), click the performance heading and you should see 4 box's for a quad, 2 for a dually.

Why would they not be all working? Any symptoms?

That's god-awful ancient.

Orthos is Prime95, but it is wrapped in an antiquated user interface.

Just get Prime95, it automatically detects how many concurrent threads the system supports and launches precisely this many worker threads. It is the same algorithms as orthos but a more up-to-date user interface and worker spawning mechanism.

To the OP: when you launch the Prime95 program it prompts you as to whether you want to test with "small", "large", or "blend"...choose "small" since you want to test your CPU. Let it run for a healthy 8-12 hrs. You should see four worker threads.

Prime95 in small FFTS test will tell you everything you need to know about CPU stability. Tell it to run in four threads, then watch it. There will be four sub windows with status of completed itterations, and when a core fails it will present itself in an error. If your CPU cannot go 9 hours on prime95 at stock in small ffts or blend test then you CPU is defective and you should RMA. Prime95 is also an excellent tool for testing overclocking stability as well.

Thank you for the solutions.
Another problem i had is this weird message on the boot screen : "CPU is unworkable or has been changed". I could still just press f1 and proceed to windows with no problem at all. I dont know what that was supposed to mean...anyway my pc is working normally now. No double boot even on a cold start. All i did was set it to boot from hard disk, in the bios menu. I'll have to wait and see how long this will last. Abit is really weird.

Are you using a stock cooler? That could be a sign of overheating. Download real temp and check your core temperatures. That could be you problem.

I have the Cooler Master Hyper 212 cooler fan and my pc is not overclocked. My casing, the Cooler Master Elite335 also has 2x120mm fans one in the front and one at the back. I'd be safer using a p45 chipset mobo like the asus p5qe, i guess.

My Abit IP35-E did that quite often (freezing on POST in mid-word). I think it is just a problem with the board (kind of like the double-POST).

The power on/off during booting will eventually damage hard drive. Then the best thing to do with Abit is to avoid Abit.
