How do I bypass pattern lock with password?

NOT looking for hack.
When I set up the security it allowed me to use a pattern lock and asked me to set up a password as backup.

My question is how can I get it to ask me for the password instead of using the pattern lock?

Android 4.2 Ice Cream Sandwich on Samsung tablet.

Well right in the settings where you can choose if you want slide lock, pattern lock, pin, password, just choose password.

do it wrong a bunch of times, it will tell you to wait 30 seconds to try again, at the bottom of the screen there will be text "Forgot unlock pattern" tap that and it will ask for username/pass
