charcoal suit, black shoes, black belt.

I'm not a fan of navy blue in general, and black suits are usually reserved for funerals.

if you're only getting one shirt, I'd say white. otherwise, a mix of white and light blue.

whatever you do please don't get a fucking tie bar.

Not sure what the fuck professions you guys are in, but black suits are ubiquitous in accounting/finance.

I've got six or so bow ties, i'm assuming that these should be relegated to casual days when I only wear the vest.

I'm not hip enough to wear bow ties so I dunno.

My preference would be charcoal over navy, but either one would be good IMO.

Charcoal two-piece suit, two button, notch lapel; don't get a three-piece suit as a vest is overly formal and just looks silly on most people. White spread-collar shirt, blue striped tie; no paisley, no tie bars. Black belt, black shoes, black socks. Simple, basic, business-like.

I'm in IT; dress code here is t-shirts and hoodies.

but I take the subway with all the Wall St guys and I almost never see a black suit anywhere (and it's generally disparaged against in the fashion mags in favor of charcoal, navy, or pin-stripe)

Worked in accounting/finance in DTLA, black suits everywhere.

clearly YMMV.

That said, I would not recommend a black suit.

Personally, I'd go with the navy suit and the light blue shirt.

I'm at an IBank in NYC and I usually only see blue and gray suits. The only people wearing black suits are the security personnel.

professorship can lend itself to bowtie wearing. After you start lecturing, do you intend to wear a suit daily? If so, you may want to pick up a few more.

I think you have a little time? If so, get the material swatches sent to you before you finalize your material selection. The cost for the swatches will be applied to your suit order, and that way you know exactly what you're getting.

The colors look nice. I'd buy clothes in those colors if I was looking for more.

this is mostly me just being anal retentive, but I'm never happy the way anything else looks with navy blue.

blue suit/black shoes or blue suit/brown shoes both just look really off-putting to me.

Are these full canvas suits? Loving the three piece. Might buy a navy one for myself.

A navy suit with some nice burgundy oxfords can be pretty damn dashing. Hard to find a good matching belt though.

I don't do interviews until August. The plan is daily wearing on lecture days, Likely 3 days a week.

Lots of shades of "brown". I personally like the color combination.

OP, don't forget that if an MTM suit doesn't fit you, it will take quite some time before it gets altered/remade to your liking. For your first suit I strongly recommend buying off-the-rack (pre-made) so that you can gather the essential knowledge before tackling MTM.

Hey OP, nice choices!

I like the blue suit you chose. If you want to save some money, you can skip the vest and go 2 piece. There may be occasions to wear the vest, but usually you will probably keep it at home. That said, it could work well on you as a professor to skip the jacket and wear the vest.

I also like the charcoal suit. Definitely go 2 piece on this though.

I would suggest you consider swapping out the black suit for a lighter grey suit. Check out the essential grey, or the essential grey herringbone. I have a black suit and a light grey suit and I wear my light grey one 10x more.

For shirts, I have the lavender and the light blue you have chosen. The lavender is actually a bit more intense then it appears in the picture. I wear it with my blue suit, but that's it. I would suggest swapping it out for a white shirt. It'll go with everything.

For the future, you can think of getting some patterned shirts. Generally, the rule of thumb for patterns and solids is suit:shirt:tie = pattern:solid:pattern or solid:pattern:solid. Of course solid:solid:solid works well too. I've got the light blue gingham from indochino and it is one of my most worn shirts.

Also, use "SHIRTBUNDLES" when ordering and you'll get 3 standard shirts for $240.

Oh, and take the time to get measured properly.

FYI: when ordering a big batch like this for your first time, indochino will usually make one suit and maybe one shirt first. They'll send them to you to test the fit, and then once you finalize the fit and measurements, they'll make and send everything else.

how is indochino these days? used to be VERY hit and miss with fit and the quality wasn't too great (cheap fused half canvassing and stuff like that).

They've gone slightly higher end now. You can still get cheap suits from them from time to time, but they have really decent italian fabrics and high end shirts now.

I never understood why people complained about the fit... they'll remake it and let you adjust it after you receive it. Keep adjusting until it fits right, and then dial that measurement in. Apparently all their measurements and patterns are digital so it should be the exact same each time, once you get it right.

My son got his first suit from Indochino. It arrived in less than two weeks and was a perfect fit. Seems to be pretty good quality as well.

Express makes decent suits if you're on a budget. My friend's mom works at Giorgio Armani and I've built up a collection over the years with the family discount on top of sales lol.

Not sure what the fuck profession you are in - but considering I work in accounting/finance consulting, I would say you are incorrect.

Black suit is for funerals and those that do not know the least bit of modern fashion.
