Usually you need hacked firmware to do it. Generally the burner will read the media code and burn at the default speed and slower only.

Just try it and see. My burner has no problem burning 4x disc at 8x.

What burner do you have? And what type of media are you using? Usually the burner will spin up when the media is inserted in the drive and will do a quick test and see what speed it can reliably burn the disc at. So it depends on your burner and media.

What burner you have? Have you updated it to the latest firmware? I use Nero6 to burn with my Benq 800A and it gives me option to burn at 8x. I burned over 400 DVDs all at 8x. Most were Memorex 4x DVD+R burned at 8x.

sure, but will it work? I rather have a reliable burn than one that will fail..I don't get why people want to burn cds out of specs. Most of the time when i burn, i burn slower than the cd specs to get better quality buirns.

ditto that, who wants 400 DVDs that might not work when you want to watch them
