What is the procedure for getting sales tax exempt status for my business?

Hire a lawyer. Lots of complicated federal paperwork. You need to be a charity, research inst, hospital, or something tax friendly. Sorry, if you sell doodads no go.

You need to file some papers with your state. Once you do that, they will be expecting to see quarterly tax returns from you for the money you owe for reselling the items you bought tax-exempt.

I think he is just asking about being exempt from NY State sales tax.
Many resellers here get that exemption, but I'm not sure what the procedure is.
My best friend used to own his own business, maybe I can ask him.

Yea contact the "franchise tax board" in your state.

You file papers and get a resellers certificate. Like Kranky said, the state will then expect to see your quarterly sales figures.

You'll need a tax id. Basically your purchases for the business will be tax free since you'll be charging sales tax on the items that you resell...

Also, you have to prove after a few years that you are making money to show that its a real business and not a hobby or anything.

Yes I am just trying to get exempt from NYS sales tax on items I buy and thus will be charging tax to the people I sell the products to
