How do I backup Vista Laptops to a MS Server 2003 Box?

Hey guys and gals, long time no see!

I am currently helping out at an office that has a server 2003 box in the closet that's not doing anything. They also have 15+ vista laptops deployed that, like most offices, HAVE NO BACKUP SOLUTION AT ALL!!!

What I would like to do is to have all of the laptops backup or sync their files to directory's on the Server 2003 box.

My question is, what is the best way to go about this?

Is there software in server 2003 that will do this? Is it the best way to go?

I would prefer a free solution, but I'm sure that I could pull some strings to buy some software licenses if it is really necessary.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply Chiefcrowe.

I would love to use home server, or just a nas with decent built-in software, but I have to use their 2003 box.

They paid a lot of money for it and need to use it in their minds, so I gotta go with it.

far as I know of, windows server 2003 doesnt have an option to backup remote workstations. Acronis has software that can backup the vista desktops and they can be managed from centralize location. It's called Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advance Workstation. It's $100-$135 per license.

should have read more of your op instead of the first few lines. Is that server 2003 box setup as an domain controller, or are those 15+ laptops connected to a domain controller? If those laptops are connected to a domain controller. I know in at least server 2003 and server 2008 and not sure about server 2000. But you can deploy a folder redirection policy through group policy to have the my documents folder be stored in a different location. For instance you can tell server 2003 to create a folder redirection group policy to redirect the users documents folders to a share drive on the server.

oh that sucks you have to use their machine.

the folder redirect idea is great though.. sounds like a good option if you can do it.

The employees have files all over the place. On the desktop, documents folder, downloads, etc... and I don't think that
changing this behavior is in the cards : (

The document folder redirect sounds ideal, but is there another solution that will snag all things and chuck it on the server, preferably at shut down?

Is anyone familiar with the synchronization utility in xp? I'm told that it can sync over a network when booting or shutting down.

Has anyone played with this before and is it in vista?
