How do I attach these speakers to my Audigy? - NOW ANOTHER PROBLEM...PLEASE HELP

I want to attach these Midiland S4 8200 speakers to my SB Audigy with a digital connection. The digital inputs for the speakers are optical and coaxial. What type of cable do I use and will it attach to my Audigy? Thanks.

edit: Now I'm having problems getting sound from all 5 satellite speakers. See the end of this thread for details.

Unfortunately, I think you're SOL. The only thing you can do is get yourself a sound card that features the connections you need (Audigy Platinum, Audigy Platinum eX, GTXP, etc.)

EDIT: Nevermind.... check out the .pdf manual. 😉

I connected the speakers with a coaxial cable (with a 3.5mm headphone jack > RCA coaxial adapter). It seems to work, but I don't get output to the rear channels. Any ideas about why? I have no idea, but I think it's a software problem. Thanks.

The 3.5mm jack can only carry stereo information. So too does the RCA jacks, each plug provides one channel of sound. Hence your rear channels (and centre channel too probably), aren't producing any sound now.

The manual states:
Under the Front Analog Input connection, the front speakers and the subwoofer will be the default speakers to produce sound.
(From the bottom of page 6 in the PDF file)

You need to use a digital connection, either digital coaxial or optical, to get full 5.1 sound. Either with the included ports on the Audigy Platinum, or with the card from Creative

I'm assuming you are using the Audigy's digtal out?
The reason you hear the front channles only is because the digital coax out only outputs PCM when playing music or games (which is stereo) The only way to use all five speakers with a digital connection is if your source is either Dolby Digital or DTS encoded. You will need to go the ananlog route and connect wires for front left/right, rear left/right and center/sub if you want 5.1 sound on games and music. The Audigy has plugs for them and you will need three stereo miniplugs to dual RCA wires.

OK, it seems like the Midiland has analog inputs for fornt and rear only so its going to be 4.1 only (no center channel). There is also no seperate LFE signal so the Midiland just reroutes the bass from the front and rear into the sub.

Why did I get 5.1 sound when I had my Inspire 5700s through a digital connection?

Would an optical out card help?

This is from Creative's Website on the Inspire 5700:

*Note: Optical connections support stereo, Dolby Pro Logic, and AC3 audio streams. Stereo signals can be expanded by the Creative Multi Speaker Surround? (CMSS?) feature to 5.1-channel sound. Refer to your audio device's documentation for additional information on supported audio streams.

This is basically like Dolby Pro logic. If your Midiland decoder box have Dolby Pro-logic I/II or any other similar sound modes, it can 'expand' the stereo signal and spread it across all speakers. However, this is not discreet 5 channel sound (only Dolby Digital/DTS have seperate signals for all speakers). If you want to take advantage of EAX, A3D and other gaming sound modes which ouputs seperate signals for front and rear speakers, you have to use the analog connection.

Creative brand speakers can support true 5.1 sound using a special SPDIF connection with Creative Sound Blaster Lives and Audigies. However, no other speaker manufacturer supports this standard.

Its not 'true 5.1 sound'. Excerpt from Creative site:

Realistic 5.1 sonic sound field with any 2 or 4 channel sound card using CMSS® feature

Realistic? Yes. True 5.1? No. Like I said before, its like Dolby Pro-logic where surround sound is matrixed off the front channels.

"Special SPDIF connection"? Highly doubtful, probably just another marketing gimmick to sell ordinary cables at extraordinary prices.

Hhmm... never knew they made those 'special' cables🙁 But since he's using Midiland speakers, he's out of luck then.
