Is there a certain line I should apply it on like the Core 2's? I was just planning on putting a dab in the middle without spreading it and then putting the heatsink down.

It has more to do with the HSF solution you are using.

If you are using stock cooling solution, then yeah a small pea in the middle is the way to go.

AC5 is pretty thick. I usually put a very small dab in the middle first. Then wrapping my finger tightly in thin plastic (plastic wrap, sandwich bag, walmart bag, ect.) spread the thermal paste evenly and thinly across the cpu die.

It's not necessary to spread it. The heatsink will pressure/thin it out to where it needs to be; and even further when the CPU warms (during heating the thermal compound decreases in viscosity).
