How do I accelerate h.264/x.264 videos with 9600 GSO?

I've tried everything. I even downloaded the Pure Video HD and that doesn't do squat. I ripped and encoded a lot of my HD material into .mkvs I play in VLC. Problem is, my HTPC that I just built can't handle the 1080p material. Am I screwed? I was thinking of selling this setup and getting a 780G based motherboard+cpu. That WILL accelerate h.264, correct?

Would this also be a problem when playing 1080p content direct from disc? I ask because my HTPC uses a 9600GSO and I play HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs often with no issues. My TV is only 720p but I'm not sure if that affects how much power is needed to decode the video or not. As a note I use the version of PowerDVD that came with my HD player.

I thought the hardware acceleration support was for x264 not h264? I'm on Vista and 7 and neither of them play well (massive stuttering) if you try to force hardware acceleration with h264.

x264 is just an open-source H.264 encoder, so it's not another format.
