How do holograms work?

I know it uses lasers and stuff, and that they recentenly made one that can project outward, but I've never seen a good explaination of exactly how it works.

Is any one in this field?

That'll be cool if you don't need a monitor for a computer, just a hologram machine. It would take up less space.
