How do free wi-fi coffee shops/etc stop abuse of the connection?

I have always wondered how they do this because you never know who will walk in the door one day, buy something and open the laptop and do some obscene stuff with it.

BTW: Does anyone think these free hotspots are safe at all, since most are just open to anyone?

Some filter some not.

But almost all have Viedo cameras stamped with date and time. They can match real faces to what ever happend at a certain time.

its like anything else that a business offers to its customers. they must ask "Is the risk worth the reward?" I guess they figure offering free wireless internet will bring customers in and while they are in they will spend money. Its probably a bigger risk for them to sell hot coffee than offer free wireless internet access.

Like every things else that we deal with there is not a single best and a lot of variation. very varied.

Some are Not even aware that there is problem. :shocked:

Some Filter.:light:

Some have RADIUS and would give you free password.:thumbsup:

Some (that I know in NYC) run survey to make sure that a valid signal would be obtained only inside.

As an example, you can controll the system output by using flat directional Antenna on an External Wall facing to the inside toward the Kitchen.:beer:
