Most of the carpool lanes around here are limited access. So the cops simply sit at the end of the off-ramp where there's usually a stop light or line of cars waiting to turn onto local roads. Easy pickings. They should be, and are, fined heavily around here.

I went to DC area a couple years ago and I was very shocked to see them doing this. I was also amazed at how excellent the HOV setup was compared to our own at the purple mushroom tip of America's Wang.

I was like - damn, shooting fish in a barrel! Do people really just blatantly drive on to the HOV access only onramps with just themselves??!! Yup, lots of em.

Here in Boston on 93S, there's one segment for about 200 yards where there's a second lane for exiting back into the main lanes. Every once in awhile, a state cop will be there watching cars as they pass and pulling over the ones without a passenger. Occasionally they'll sit at the far end of the HOV lane as well.

Cars have heiny sensors in the seats that register with the transponders that ping those white things on the poles over the roadway. Only one heiny (the driver) registers a violation. ;)

Here in NY/long island, they watch for singles but a lot of them there are people that recline the seats to nap, so they get pull over and let go w/o problems

I have always wondered about this when I am driving my van conversion with my wife and children in the back seat watching a movie. It has window shades so when those are down there is no way to see in the back.

I'm sure people can come up with ways to sidestep this. Real doll comes to mind. D:

Mannequins, yes. I have heard about that being done in DC quite a bit along the Dulles toll road.

Blowup dolls - I do not think any guy will admit to using one.:whiste:

As to the ladies/girls - you tell us:p

On some stretches of the expressway around here, it's 3 (bodies) per car for carpool lane.

does anyone know if CA uses any of these heat sensors? or just visual inspection

From what I've heard, they just drive around and look into the cars.

A more sophisticated set up would be having cops on an overpass with binoculars and more cops driving around ready to pounce.

From what I've seen here in SoCal they don't seem to go to great lengths to enforce this. They usually just look over as they pass by especially the motorcycle cops who are splitting the carpool lane.

highway patrol usually sits on top of an overpass with easy merge ramp down to freeway. officer watches oncoming traffic and spots you through front windshield, then he either flogs the 500 ci engine to make the stop or radios his buddy half a mile further down and road to make the stop.

Motor patrol usually works in packs, with 1 spotter/radar and 3-5 officers on cycles ready to intercept. while 1 is writing the cite, there is always another ready to make the stop.

Police haven't had 500 ci engines for decades. The Crown Vics are only 281 ci (4.6 litre) and even the rare Chrysler 300s with the massive 6.4 litre Hemi are only about 390 ci.

Even my dodge with 8.0L is only 488 CI. I would love a 572 or something.

Around here the cop sits on the far left shoulder next to the HOV lane. He usually has binoculars, and just waits for the car to pass then jumps in his cruiser and proceeds to start some accidents.

Around here as well, it's rare that busted up hooptie that was going 20mph less in the HOV lane with one dude in it gets stopped.
