Hi!

I've tried to disable the SSID broadcast on this low-end model..but I'm thinking it doesn't allow me to.

Am I right?

I have used the router versions of it, it should be under the wireless tab.

Thanks for the reply amdfanboy.

Unfortunately, if it is...I'm obviously way too blind and dumb to find it....

Well after two weeks you should consider cutting your loses. :brokenheart:

Get into CompUSA buy a Netgear Wireless Router for $19.99 after rebate,:D and sell, or give (Valentine day)

You know, Jack..me thinks you're speakin' good sense there.

After reading about all these folks who go hopping on home users wireless networks, I'm petrified someone's going to find mine and easily "have their way with it" and infiltrate my networked computers....

So, you'd suggest a Netgear, eh? I'll have to look around.....

I think that the Staples deal was for Sun. & Mon. only.

The CompUSA deal is for the whole week.

Disabling SSID broadcast is an almost completely pointless measure. The only difference it makes in the various wardriving/wireless hacking tools is instead of putting your SSID next to the network it discovered as its name... it leaves the name blank or uses a default. Your network is still found, their tools will still go about their business, they just won't be using the same name for your network you are. Whoopie.

I have to reiterate what Buddha Bart just said. It seems a myth has been created by alot of ppl that disabling the SSID will prevent ppl from "finding" your wireless network. I say dl netstumbler (its free) and run it on your wireless computer. It will pickup your wireless AP with or without SSID.
If you want to make your wireless network as secure as possible, enable WEP (64 or 128bit, if someone wants to crack it, doesn't matter which one you choose), use mac addy filtering (also easily copied by those who want to), and disable DHCP for wireless. Those 3 things combined will keep your novice/average computer user off and away from spying your wireless network. If you want to really secure it, setup VPN or Radius. Both can be done if you have a linux machine and time to spare.
I believe in one simple thing that most computer experts have said, don't use the wireless connection for important things. Define important? Don't check your bank balance or pay bills on your wireless connection (get a wire for those things if you only have a laptop, most laptops have a wired NIC), don't buy things online on wireless. The rest you are up to determine on your own what is important to you or not.

EDIT: You can also prevent ppl from getting on your wireless network by reducing the strength of your signal, so that it doesn't go too far from what you need it for. That isn't an option on my AP.

I always wonder why we have the tendency to think that live out there is all a facsimile of our mind. There is some time life beyond the Paranoia.

I have an installation in a place that you do not allow to drive. I.e. NO WAR DRIVING or any other similar Juvenile kicks. However a lot of people live in relatively close proximity and many have Wireless. It happen often that people get logged to their neighbor wireless connection and surf through it without even noticing that it is going on (they are not Geeks). Disabling the SSID Broadcasting is a lot of help in such situation.

Hmm.....that's yet some more useful information.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post it! I try to read up on things and not just go in blindly...but....I still feel somewhat blind.

Let me ask you this, is the new 802.11g security protocols (WAP?) really that much better than WEP? That is..if someone is determined to break WEP, then are they also just as likely to break WAP?

Again, thanks

For a home user, I don't think you have to worry about it . Just enable WEP and that will stop 99% of Wana be hackers. If you find a wireless router under $10, get it. Otherwise, your just wasting your money. I would not have said the same thing if you building it from scratch, but your not. In my honest opinion, Your fine with what you have.
