How dirty does your case get?

I'm currently using an antec ninehundred case. I pulled the 2 front fan enclosures out today to find about 4 inches of solid black crud caked on all 4 walls of each enclosure and on the fans. I was pulling that stuff out by the handful for a half an hour.

The computer sets on the carpet so it loves to attract all kinds of crap. Unfortunately I don't have enough room in here to get it off of the floor.

Is it possible to keep these things clean??

No matter how many filters it has, dust and other junk will still find a way in some kind of opening. The only way to avoid cleaning the entire thing out from time to time is to block off all ventilation holes, put restrictive filters on all fans, and clean the filters often. Your air flow, and consequently your temperatures, will suck.

Mine has dog/cat hair stuck to the radiator right now. I house sat for some friends for 3 weeks while they were gone (he's going through cancer treatment) and they have a dog and a cat indoors. I should clean it...

Four inches? What do you do, dump buckets of dust into your room?

It appears so. It took 3 cans of air duster, wipes and a vacuum cleaner to finish the job.

The case dirt is a good indication of how good/bad the air you breathe is. Does anyone smoke in the house? That will really make a case get nasty.

Every now and then i'll bring mine outside and blow all the dust out with the air compressor. Nowhere near inches though! Mostly cat hair and stuff.

Mines full of dust after two months - Open it up, blow it out and clean the filters on a regular basis. Just a fact with three 120mm intake fans.

Once a week a use my vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust out of the front filters and whatever can be extracted from the top and side fan.
Once a month I open up the case and use several tools to clean everything, like brushes, hair drier and just blowing the dust using my lungs. Every 4-5 months or so, I take everything out and make a serious cleanup, since dust and dog hair tend to get stuck in some places where brushes can't reach. If I just had an air compressor. 🙁

Check this one out. Totally worth it.

Though TBH, I would not mind even more PSI. At first I was scared to use high air pressure inside a PC, but know what, it would probably take more like 500psi to actually cause damage. Just need to be careful around fans, and blasting the air gun at max against the side of a ram stick is probably not a good idea either 😛

Large blasts from a couple feet away really help get rid of the initial dust though.

I just cleaned a PC today where the fan in the PSU stopped working, it smelled horrible in that case. A combination of burn, and old dust. About a cm thick of dust at the bottom. The PSU STILL works, but it overheats. I'll just get them a new one and add it to the bill.

That looks like a very nice kit. Time to setup a 20 amp circuit so I can run my compressor and shop vac at same time. 😀

i run my comp 2 feet above a hepa filter cause i have nasty allergies and some athsma, so i keep it in my bedroom running 24/7. it used to get dusty enough to dust it out once or twice a week, but now i havent dusted it in literally months and there isnt a speck of dust in it. used to get really bad after 2 weeks even in the same room with the filter, but moving it right under the desk helps a shit ton

i think the worst i have ever seen a computer case get was when i opened one guys case to clean it cause it was overheating, to find gooey tar caked all over the fan blades and a layer of it on the bottom of the case, and all up in the CPU cooler. it's a wonder the thing didnt catch fire. guy had the comp 8 years apparently and he was a heavy smoker, but man that is the nastiest i have ever seen it. everything else pales in comparison

ed: like this only about 3 times as bad

that link contains some interesting stuff.... such as roach infested power supplies and a failing video card with a dead frog on it.... hopefully I never run across those things in my travels...

hehe..

as u guys can see the dust gets pretty bad in my case:

However my chambers are split into the water section and the component section.

I have filters all over the place. I guess dust is more dependant on your room and living conditions.

Lately they started to build a new house in front of me, so ive been getting quite a bit more then normal dust in my room.

To start with I live in a dry environment (Alberta Canada). My gaming box doesn't get dirty much or any of them as a matter fact. (that's what filters are for 😉) Have a look for yourselves...(this rig was built back in November last year and I haven't touched it since, in or out)

I'm picky about cases and have gone through a lot of them, (examples SS's TJ09 or LL's V1000, Antec's 900, CM's Cosmos 1000, TT's Armor and the list goes on) and this is the best and easiest case to work with by far, to me at least. I don't have to worry about twisting and hiding cables, they are all hidden automatically. These are my current cases...
