I'm 28, and back in 7th grade, they took a day in math class to tell us how to properly fill out checks and the check register. I think the teacher even gave us a quiz on it. o_O

I still write one check a month, to Charter Cable. I gave them my credit card info once at a previous address. They kept billing the card for the old account after I moved. Took months for them to finally get the billing right.

They will never get a CC or bank account number from me again. Besides, I still have like 150 checks to use up, bought them at least ten years ago, when checks were still used a bit.

And I still fill out the register as well. I can look at that quicker than I can log in.

We learned how to balance our budget, including how to write checks and keep up with a running balance, in middle school.

Do I still write checks? Not normally. We did have to write a ton of checks when building our house last year. Not everyone runs around with a method for running charge cards.

I didn't learn anywhere, I just started doing it. If you have an IQ that's greater than 5, you can probably figure it out. Also, the only checks I write these days are for rent. All of the others go through my bank's online bill pay.

Yeah, I hate checks. Can't remember the last time I used one. But quite honestly, how hard is it to add and subtract. Why do you need someone, besides a 1st grade teacher, to show you how to do that?

Coupons are awesome :D Last week at Kroger my wife got $80 off our $190 grocery bill. She loves doing that stuff (and I love her for it  )

Yeah, with coupons I see the point, you're trying to save money. With a check, you're just doing it wrong.

I learned from from my parents too, but I remember learning how to fill out a check and keep a register in Home Economics class where I also learned how to cook a few basic items and to use a sewing machine.

When I was in high school, Home Economics was a required course, we all went through it.

I'm down to writing three checks per month, and I only write these three because they either charge more to setup other payment methods or I don't trust them to work properly with online Bill Pay. I write one for my auto loan, one for my rent, and one for the water bill (not collected by the local municipality but by some shady sounding company in another state).

Passive-aggressiveness is such an ugly psychological disorder, perhaps you should see a professional.

Ehh, I learned in "consumer economics class" in middle school.

That said, I used to write checks for my mortgage, but now I pay that online. Haven't written a check in maybe 3 or 4 years.

LOL, I love it. :awe: Hilarious that people get pissed off because they had to wait an extra 30 seconds in the checkout line.

30 seconds? In your dreams. It takes twice that just digging the checkbook out of the carpetbag of a purse. Then locate the pen, find the reading glasses, confirm the amount, locate wallet from carpetbag so the drivers license can be procured, and depending on store policy, the cashier will visually check it, or write the number on the check. That's when things are going well. It only gets worse from there...

Do stores even accept cheques? I did not think they did, due to the fact that there's always the risk it can bounce.

When I do write a cheque I don't bother filling in the cheque book. I don't write enough cheques so I just leave myself a mental note that a cheque will be coming out of my bank.

they used to teach this stuff in school but check use is on the decline

i remember learning in 2nd or 3rd grade, which was worthless by the time i had a checkbook

which was short lived, because im only 30, and after a few months at a bank with a checkbook and no online banking i went to a decent bank and got a card and a login and paper is stupid and i wont be using a checkbook anymore. /thank you, bill pay.

I want to say I learned about this in either the 4th or 5th grade. They took a couple of days to teach it to us, and had us write fake checks for stupid things like pencils and paper. Now a days I think I've written two checks in the past five years. I still think it should be taught as they're still used (as my tearing apart my office attempting to remember where I put the last checks I have reminds me) and honestly teaching kids to manage their money is never a bad thing.

4th grade project was you have $1000 to fully deck out your bedroom with anything you want. You have to come in at least $50 from $1000, but cannot go over.

We had to write checks and cut out things from magazines that we wanted. Was fun and I learned at the same time.

I'm 28 now and still write checks, even more so now that there is camera deposit with smartphones and most banks.

I got a checking account when I went to college.

I balanced it exactly once. I dutifully filled out the sheet and did the math and was pretty proud when it came out perfect.

From that point on it seemed like a waste of time. I figured out pretty quickly that a buffer is easier than balancing. My first buffer was $100, and it steadily grew from there.

My current buffer is $2000.

that's a pretty self-centered view you have there:thumbsup:

so because someone might be in a rush for "insert reason here" they are automatically an ass hole/super important?

LOL, great logic:D i think you've pointed out who the ass hole is.

on a related topic, i can't stand it when i get my rebate back and it's in a form of a visa prepaid card. those are such a pain in the ass to use in alot of places, including the internets. just write a check out to me so i can deposit the damn thing.
